According to major foreign media outlets such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal on the 12th (local time), Byron Allen plans to invest $120 million to secure a controlling stake in BuzzFeed. As this news broke, BuzzFeed's stock price on the US stock market immediately soared more than twofold. The market is assessing that BuzzFeed, which had faced a severe management crisis, has prepared a dramatic breakthrough by welcoming major capital as a controlling shareholder. Numerous outlets, including The Guardian and MarketWatch, are also heavily covering the news and paying attention to the impact Allen's acquisition will have on the media industry. The industry is showing high interest in what kind of synergy will be created between the traditional media business Allen has built so far and the digital-centric BuzzFeed.

$120 Million Stake Acquisition and Transaction Terms

According to BuzzFeed's official announcement, Byron Allen's family company, 'Allen Family Digital, LLC', will purchase 40 million shares of BuzzFeed at $3 per share, securing a majority stake equivalent to approximately 52% of the total shares.

Considering that BuzzFeed's stock price was around $0.71 per share just before the announcement, this is a price with a significant premium attached. Of the total $120 million acquisition cost, $20 million will be paid in cash upon the completion of the transaction, and the remaining $100 million will be funded in the form of a 5-year promissory note bearing 5% annual interest (5% annual interest). The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of May 2026, subject to customary closing conditions.

Major Management Changes: Jonah Peretti's Focus on AI

Once the transaction is completed, Byron Allen will take office as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BuzzFeed. Jonah Peretti, who has served as CEO since co-founding BuzzFeed in 2006, will step down from his position and take on the role of President of the newly established 'BuzzFeed AI'.

Through an official statement, Peretti assessed, "Byron Allen is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the media industry," adding, "His vision, operating experience, and long-term commitment to premium content make him highly suited to lead the next phase of growth for BuzzFeed and HuffPost."

Regarding his role change, he also emphasized, "I am very excited to be able to focus on a more hands-on role in product and technology development, made possible by recent advancements in AI," and, "I am confident that AI will fundamentally transform the media industry."

Large-Scale Restructuring and Future Vision: Dreaming of Becoming a Rival to YouTube

BuzzFeed plans to reorganize the company in preparation for Byron Allen's joining. In the official statement, Peretti announced that they are facing significant changes, including cost reductions, and will spin off BuzzFeed Studios (micro-dramas, animation, premium studios, etc.) and Tasty to establish them as independent entities. Previously, Peretti also suggested through a memo sent to employees that there could be large-scale staff reductions during this process.

Byron Allen, who will become the new CEO, revealed plans to expand the platform based on BuzzFeed's strong brand and user reach. Through the official announcement, Allen premised, "Our vision is to expand the business into free streaming video, audio, and user-generated content," and then declared the ambitious goal that, "Powered by AI, BuzzFeed will officially become another premier free video streaming service chasing YouTube."

BuzzFeed's sale, which once achieved a corporate valuation of $1.7 billion (approximately 2.5256 trillion KRW), took place amidst continuous financial deterioration. According to the Q1 2026 earnings report released alongside by BuzzFeed, the company's total revenue was $31.6 million, a 12.4% decrease compared to the same period last year, and its net loss amounted to $15.1 million. This investment by Byron Allen will serve as an opportunity to provide BuzzFeed with desperately needed liquidity and increase the focus of its business operations.
