Trillion-Won Mega Deal Market Revitalized, Movements of Conglomerates and Global PEFs Detected

The most notable news this week is that LY Corporation (Line Yahoo) has proposed an acquisition of the Japanese restaurant search platform Tabelog for a staggering 6.4 trillion won. This is evaluated as an example showing the potential for large-scale synergy creation between Asian companies in the digital platform sector. Domestically, it was reported that Lotte Rental is holding acquisition discussions with global private equity fund (PEF) operator Texas Pacific Group (TPG). Lotte Rental was previously acquired for over 1 trillion won, and if this deal is successful, it is expected to greatly help resolve the liquidity crisis of Lotte Group.

Furthermore, regarding the acquisition transaction of SK Group's core energy power plant assets, Ulsan GPS and SK Multi Utility stakes, Woori Investment & Securities successfully completed arranging 600 billion won in acquisition financing, paving the way for a massive deal. Alongside this, global investment bank JPMorgan announced a direct investment of 10 billion dollars in the security industry, which is expected to lead the global flow of funds into strategic industrial sectors such as defense, critical minerals, and AI. Domestic bio company Gencurix, which has been put up for sale, set out to secure liquidity by pursuing a sale of management rights, while Lockheed Martin is being mentioned as a strong acquisition candidate for defense company Ultra Maritime. In addition, Chanel strengthened its targeting of the men's luxury market by acquiring Charvet, a men's luxury brand with 188 years of tradition.

The market-leading sectors of artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and robotics proved their intense heat by continuing to attract large-scale investments this week. In particular, Twelve Labs, which develops video understanding systems, showed off its status as the biggest catch in the AI sector by attracting a whopping 150 billion won Series B investment from prominent domestic and international investors such as Naver Ventures and Amazon. AI-based institutional investment workflow platform Link Alpha secured a 34 billion won Series A investment from Atinum Investment, Mirae Asset Venture Investment, and others. Furthermore, full-stack AI solution company AB180 attracted 21.4 billion won, and AI virtual data center (VDC) platform Atad attracted a 10.5 billion won investment, raising expectations for the commercialization and advancement of AI technology.

The strength of the semiconductor sector was also prominent. Semiconductor product development company Newratek secured 21.8 billion won in funding at the Pre-IPO stage, and AI semiconductor design company FuriosaAI also attracted a 20 billion won Pre-IPO investment from the Export-Import Bank of Korea. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) equipment specialist NexusB set out to strengthen the competitiveness of semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment with a 15 billion won Series C investment. Meanwhile, Claude developer Anthropic is reported to be in discussions with Samsung Electronics to develop its own AI chips, raising the possibility that the influence of domestic semiconductor companies in the AI market will further expand. In the robotics field, industrial robot and automation specialist Hanyang Robotics was acquired by Now Robotics for 7.5 billion won to enhance its competitiveness.

In addition, promising technology startups that drew market attention attracted multiple seed and series investments. AI surgical robot development company Rosota received a 1.5 billion won seed investment from FuturePlay, Schmidt, and others, while AI companion startup Deep Grove received a 1.5 billion won investment from Kakao Ventures and BonAngels. Various AI-based companies, including semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment startup Hesis, bio AI diagnostic technology company Amply, hyper-personalized AI agent solution company Sagak, AI medical imaging solution company AIRS Medical, and AI-based marketing content production company Studio Aim, attracted investments and are accelerating their technological advancement.

Other Notable Investment and M&A Deals: Bio, Commerce, and Defense Sectors Remain Active

Meaningful investment and M&A news also continued outside the advanced technology sectors. Chemoproteomics platform company Kaps Bio attracted a 29.2 billion won Series B investment from Korea Investment Partners, KB Investment, and others, striving to strengthen its technological prowess in the bio sector. Wholesale and small manufacturer-based B2B commerce platform Namdo Market set out to expand its business model through a 6 billion won Series A investment. Naval vessel security and global maritime market solution company Cyter received a 5.2 billion won Series A investment from STIC Ventures, solidifying its position in the defense and maritime security markets.

In terms of M&As, massager manufacturing and sales company Needs Tech was acquired by Shaperon for 3.7 billion won, foreshadowing changes in the healthcare device market. S-Point attracted a strategic investment from fire safety specialist Safe Korea, highlighting the importance of lithium battery fire prevention solutions. Additionally, TikTok Live-based global creator business company Hyper Networks attracted a 3 billion won Pre-A investment, demonstrating the growth potential of the digital content market. Aside from these, Global Topnet received 1 billion won, and B2B external collaboration messenger Joynt received a 1 billion won investment, with continuous capital inflows aiming for market growth across various fields.
