
Irisys, a biometrics company that ambitiously introduced facial and iris recognition-based door locks and secure USBs with the promise of "creating a world where payments and security can be kept safe without passwords," is ultimately facing an existential crisis. The downfall of this once-promising small hidden champion, which at one time achieved deliveries to the Ministry of National Defense and overseas exports, has become a painful example that goes beyond a simple individual corporate management failure to show how difficult it is for a small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) to break through the massive paradigm shifts in the global authentication and security industry with just a single solution.
■ Endless Earnings Plunge and the Swamp of Inventory... An Organization with Only 5 Employees Left
According to its pitch deck, Irisys drew the market's high expectations by cumulatively receiving over 4 billion won in investments, including attracting a 2 billion won investment from the Korea Development Bank (KDB) in 2016 at an estimated corporate valuation of 30 billion won. However, looking at recent financial indicators and operating conditions, the company's fundamental strength has been severely compromised.
The most painful aspect is the sharp deterioration in earnings. While the company generated an operating profit of 180 million won on 5.5 billion won in revenue in 2018, it turned to a deficit in 2020, recording an operating loss of -460 million won on 3.2 billion won in revenue. The situation further worsened afterward, with revenue plummeting to 1.2 billion won (operating loss of -2.3 billion won) in 2022, and shrinking to 520 million won (operating loss of -220 million won) in 2024, effectively showing a picture of falling behind in the market.
The Days Inventory Outstanding (DIO), which indicates the deterioration of cash flow, is fatal. The DIO, which was 83 days in 2020, surged to 283 days in 2022, and then increased to a staggering 364 days in 2024. This means that manufactured products have been piling up in the warehouse unsold all year round. The size of the company has also rapidly shrunk; the number of employees, which reached around 20 as recently as 2023, has dwindled to just 5 as of January 2026, putting the company in a state where normal corporate operations are virtually impossible.
■ From 'Recognition'-Centric to 'AI Defense (Liveness·Deepfake)'
The biggest industrial background behind Irisys's difficulties is the shift in the value creation area of the global biometrics market. While the core technology in the past was "who can read fingerprints, faces, and irises faster and more accurately," the center of gravity in the market has now completely shifted to "who can better defend against advanced forgery, synthesis, and account takeover attacks in the AI era."
The recent moves by global market research firms prove this. Beyond biometrics technology itself, Biometric Update and Goode Intelligence are classifying and covering the '2025 Face Liveness Market' and the '2025 Deepfake Detection Market' reports as separate core industries. Deepfake detection, in particular, is projected to grow into a massive market responding to large-scale attacks by 2027.
The acquisition of the biometric authentication company Keyless by global security firm Ping Identity in 2025, and tying this to the enhancement of "AI-based spoofing and fraud response" in early 2026, is in the same vein. In other words, beyond simply comparing biometric information, the liveness defense capability to repel 'Presentation Attacks' using photos, deepfake videos, or silicone masks has been elevated to a core competitiveness in the authentication market. Irisys, which had remained stagnant in single iris and facial recognition technologies, failed to keep up with this evolutionary trend toward 'security and defense platforms.'
■ OS Integration of Biometric Algorithms and the Dominance of Passkeys
The shift in authentication methods targeting mass consumers, such as smartphones, has also deprived independent hardware/algorithm companies like Irisys of their standing. In the past, companies tried to introduce their own proprietary biometric devices or algorithms, but today's mass market is perfectly converging into 'passkeys + on-device biometric authentication (face/fingerprint) + digital identity verification.'
Passkeys are FIDO standard-based cryptographic credentials that replace passwords, with over 3 billion already in active use worldwide. The core of passkeys is that biometric data (face, fingerprints, etc.) is not transmitted to servers, but is strictly used only for 'unlocking the user's local device (smartphone, etc.),' while only the public key remains on the server.
As a result, biometric recognition algorithms have been relegated to features inherently built into the device and operating system (OS) levels of tech giants like Apple (Face ID), Google, and Samsung. In an environment where simply having a smartphone allows users to securely log into websites and apps via passkeys using their fingerprints or faces, the incentive for consumers and businesses to specifically purchase separate iris recognition solutions or expensive hardware from SMEs like Irisys has vanished.
■ A Growing Iris Market, Yet the Fruits Belong to Global Giants
Of course, the iris recognition market itself is not in decline. According to market research firm Grand View Research, the global iris recognition market is highly promising, expected to experience high growth at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 23.4%, from $9.91 billion in 2024 to $35.57 billion in 2030.
However, the biggest paradox that arises here is that the prospect of a "large iris market" does not mean that "iris-specialized SMEs have an overwhelming advantage."
Today, iris recognition has been pushed out of popular smartphones and general consumer authentication methods; instead, it has relocated to the B2G (business-to-government) and specialized high-security sectors that require massive capital and trust, such as airports, immigration control, government national IDs, defense, and high-trust access control.
Although the market may grow explosively, it has been restructured into a framework where the fruits of this massive pie are monopolized by large global security companies closely connected to national governments and large-scale infrastructure networks, such as Thales, IDEMIA, and NEC. For SMEs lacking the capital and networks to combine with massive digital ID platforms or win large-scale national projects, they inevitably suffer a thorough marginalization, being pushed to the periphery despite market growth.
■ The Limitation of Failing to Overcome the 'Wall of the Ecosystem' Beyond Technological Superiority
Ultimately, the crisis facing Irisys is the result of an inevitable market restructuring that emerged as the biometrics industry entered its maturity phase. Irisys's initial vision of a "passwordless world" was spot-on and became a reality. However, what drove that world was not a single biometrics solution company, but rather Big Tech platforms that built a passkey ecosystem armed with device dominance, next-generation security companies armed with AI deepfake defense technologies, and global biometric security giants that dominated national-level infrastructures.
To survive by selling door locks and USBs solely on the back of excellent iris and facial recognition technology, the massive wave of the industry and the shift toward a platform-centric ecosystem were too fast and overwhelming. Irisys's existential crisis illustrates the harsh reality faced by technology-based small hidden champions in the Fourth Industrial Revolution era when they fail to proactively respond to 'market paradigm shifts.'
